About Palakkad
Palakkad or Palghat is a beautiful city which is situated in southern India. The city is situated about 350 kilometers. It is a city consisting of panchayats and municipalities. Palakkad is the gateway to Kerala due to the presence of the Palakkad gap in the Western Ghats. The place is designed with many small and medium rivers. The temperatures remain moderate throughout the year except in March and April being the hottest months. The name Palakkad is a combination of two Malayalam words Pala, the name given for barren land and Kadu which means the forest. Palakkad is the largest city in Kerala State. It is known as the Rice bowl of Kerala. Palakkad is a historic place wich have Palakkad Fort, Ratholsavam, vela (Festival used to happen in temples), and the beautiful Malampuzha garden and Dam. Palakkad was formed on the 1st of January 1957.
1. Palakkad Fort ( Kotta Maithanam)
The Palakkad Fort in Palakkad is definitely a place to visit because of the beauty and the history behind it. The Fort is made up of rocks. The construction shows us the beauty of the old architecture. The monument that has gently integrated its high walls surrounded by green gardens. It is one of the most well-maintained forts in the State of Kerala. The Fort was built in 1766 AD by Hyder Ali and it is protected under the Archaeological Survey Of India. This beautiful fort is situated in the Palakkad Town at the foothills of the Sahyadris. The mighty fort has a lot to say about its History. The Fort speaks the volumes about the stories of Legendary Tipu sultan who was the son of Hyder Ali. Plenty of shoot outs had happened between the British and the Army of Tipu. The spacious ground surrounding the fort is known as Kotta Maidhaanam. It had once served as a stable for the Elephants and Horses of Tipu and now a place for public meetings. A sub-jail located inside the fort. The fort houses an open auditorium, called Rappadi, Hanuman temple and a children park named Nehru Park.

2. Malampuzha Dam and Garden
if you have a plan to visit palakkad then Malampuzha dam and the garden is a place to visit. It is a very beautiful place surrounded by Western Ghats of India. Malampuzha Dam is an irrigation dam built on the Malmapuzha river, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha river. Malampuzha dam is the biggest dam in Kerala according to its catchment area. The total area of the dam is 145 square kilometers, the reservoir is having a capacity of 8000 cubic meters of water. The canal system is also included in the project for irrigation purposes and the reservoir provides drinking water to Palakkad town. There is a beautifully well-laid garden in front of the dam which consists of a lush green lawn, several fountains, pools, bridges for the people to walk. Ropeway a Rock garden and the snake park gives a wonderful experience for the tourist.

SILENT VALLEY NATIONAL PARK.
Silent Valley is the last remaining rain forest in Kerala. The beautiful forest is located in the Nilgiri hills. The National park consisting of some rare species of flora and fauna.
It is having unique wildlife and bird species. River kunthi (Kunthi puzha)from the Nilgiri hills flows about 25km through the valley. The river is locally known as Kunti puzha. The unique specialty of the river is that it never turns brown and the water is crystal clear. Mukkali, the entry point of Silent Valley National Park is on the Mannarkad Attappady route. Visitors are permitted to go up to the forest station at Sairandhri. Trekking will be an unforgettable experience for the tourist. People can trek for 23 km from Mukkali to Sairandhiri or you can take a jeep too. The forest is well maintained by the Forest department and the local people to maintain the exact beauty of it. Through the path of trekking, you can witness beautiful coffee plantations, eucalyptus, teak trees, and birdlife. You can also spot animals like spotted dears, elephants, langurs, and the Malabar giant squirrel. vehicular transport is permitted only up to Mukkali, nearly 24km from the National Park.
